The Back-to-School Reset: 5 Healthy Habits for the Whole Family

The start of a new school year brings earlier mornings, busier evenings and more structured routines for the entire family. Summer schedules give way to earlier mornings, busier evenings and more structured routines. While much of the focus may be on getting children ready for the classroom, this transition can also be a good opportunity for parents and caregivers to reset their own routines.

From sleep and nutrition to physical activity and everyday wellness, a few practical adjustments can help everyone settle into the school year feeling their best.

1. Get Everyone Back on a Sleep Schedule

Later bedtimes can easily become the norm during summer. As school begins, gradually returning to a consistent sleep schedule can make mornings easier and help children and adults get the rest they need.

Try keeping bedtimes and wake-up times consistent, including on weekends when possible. Creating a relaxing nighttime routine and limiting screen time before bed can also signal that it’s time to wind down.

2. Make Healthy Eating Easier

Busy schedules can make nutritious meals more challenging, especially when everyone seems to be heading in a different direction. Planning ahead can take some of the pressure off.

Instead of trying to completely overhaul your family’s diet, focus on a few manageable changes, such as:

Keeping fruits, vegetables and other nutritious snacks within easy reach

  • Preparing lunches or ingredients the night before
  • Making water the go-to drink throughout the day
  • Sitting down for meals together when schedules allow

Small choices made consistently can add up to healthier habits that last well beyond the first few weeks of school.

3. Find Ways to Keep Moving

Staying active doesn’t always have to mean a structured workout or organized sport. The CDC recommends that children and teens ages 6–17 get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. A family walk after dinner, a bike ride, time at the playground or simply playing outside can all count.

Finding activities you genuinely enjoy can make staying active feel less like another task on the schedule. It can also provide valuable time together away from phones, computers and other screens.

4. Make Room for Mental Wellness

Back-to-school season can bring excitement, but it can also create stress. Children may be adjusting to new teachers, classmates or academic expectations, while parents balance work, school schedules and household responsibilities.

Make time to check in with one another. Ask children how they’re feeling and give them opportunities to talk about what is going well or what may be worrying them. Adults should make time for their own well-being, too. Taking breaks, getting enough rest and reaching out for support when needed are all important parts of overall wellness.

5. Get Preventive Care Back on the Calendar

September is also a useful time to look at the family calendar and see whether anyone is due for routine healthcare. Annual physicals, pediatric visits, vaccinations, dental checkups and other preventive services can sometimes get pushed aside when schedules become busy.

Staying current with routine care gives healthcare providers an opportunity to monitor changes, discuss concerns and help identify potential health issues early.

Make Healthy Family Habits Part of Your Back-to-School Reset

A new school year doesn’t have to mean a completely new lifestyle, and running to catch the school bus shouldn’t be the only exercise in your family’s routine. Instead, back-to-school season can be a reminder to return to the healthy family habits that help everyone stay active, feel supported and energized, and prepare for what’s ahead.
